Superb Hotels In Britain & Ireland

This article was written by Chris Laskett of Boston MA.

We’ve just returned from a family holiday to the United Kingdom, our third in the last few years and I thought that I’d mention a few of the amazing uk hotels that we stayed in during our travels. There is so much to see and do in the wonderful cities of the British Isles, each of them offers history and tradition going back centuries. Add in the other advantage that they converse in a language not unlike our own and that an art gallery or museum can be enjoyed whatever the weather and we have the ingredients of a truly awesome holiday. We’re certain that you will enjoy visiting the British Isles, but would always advise US citizens to check with the U.S. Department of State Advice to Travelers website before undertaking international travel.

Edinburgh, Scotland

You can be assured of a warm welcome in the historic city of Edinburgh. This friendly east coast city consists of the Old Town which includes the Royal Mile and the New Town, with the two halves separated by the line of Princes Street. Edinburgh University dates back to 1582 and its colleges, galleries and museums are scattered around the city. There are many exhibits open to the visitor, check their web site for opening times.

During the Summer Edinburgh opens its doors to thousands of tourists to its festivals. The Edinburgh International Festival runs for four weeks and features music, theatre, opera and dance. Running beside it is the famous “Fringe”, which typically offers over 25,000 performances in over 250 different venues all over the city. With over 1,800 widely varying shows to choose from (with a very high percentage of world premieres) including theatre, comedy, ballet, shows for the children and many musical concerts there is something for everyone. Edinburgh is also host to the Literary Festival, the Blues & Jazz Festival and the Edinburgh International Film Festival that run throughout the summer season.

Because we were only in Edinburgh for a couple of days we were determined to push the boat out and stay in one of Scotland’s most celebrated hotels, The Scotsman on North Bridge. This amazing old hotel can be found right in the middle of many of the city’s greatest buildings and venues such as The Royal Mile, Holyrood House, Edinburgh Castle and the Scottish National Gallery are all within easy walking distance. As I said earlier we had decided to spoil ourselves with a stay at this world famous hotel and everything that we could have expected became reality.

Birmingham, England

One of the main attractions of our recent visit to Britain was a planned visit to the Crufts Dog Show which takes place at the National Exhibition Center Arena in Birmingham. Spread over 4 days, it’s the most famous dog show in the world. Last Year 143,000 visitors admired over 25,000 dogs from 26 countries taking part. Another great attraction at the show is the section labelled “Discover Dogs” where examples from 190 different breeds of dog are there with their owners, giving visitors an opportunity to question the owners and find the breed that will be right for them. Because we were only going to the dog show, rather than going into the city of Birmingham we decided to stay at a hotel near to the NEC, Birmingham. On this occasion we weren’t looking for one of the world’s top hotels, but rather a place to get a good night’s sleep after an exhausting day walking around that vast complex admiring dogs of all shapes and sizes. We booked into the Crowne Plaza NEC which is situated within the grounds of the National Exhibition Centre. The hotel was precisely as expected, clean, bright and totally unexciting. There was nothing to complain about and we’d happily use it again when visiting concerts or exhibitions at the NEC.

London, England

Our final venue on our holiday was London. If you’ve never been there you honestly do need to comprehend the sheer size of the place. It has spread outwards over the years and it’s essential that you decide precisely what you want to see during your trip else you’ll be spending all of your time traveling on underground trains and buses and let me tell you, that’s not something to look forward to. Our plan for this final few days of our trip was to get in some retail therapy i.e. shopping. With this in mind we decided to stay in London’s Knightsbridge district with its huge numbers of chic, world renowned stores such as Harrods. We stayed in the Sheraton Park Tower in ultra-stylish Knightsbridge. The Sheraton Park Tower is one of London’s most famous hotels, famed for its “One-O-One” restaurant, London’s best fish restaurant.  The Sheraton Park Tower features tremendous views over the London skyline with many rooms overlooking Hyde Park Nearby attractions apart from the shopping include Hyde Park and many of the city’s world renowned landmarks and museums.
