My hubby and I live on one of the premier walleye fishing lakes in the state of Minnesota.  We moved here about 5 years ago and have loved every minute of it.  We have always enjoyed walleye fishing.  I was surprised when my hubby began to take an interest in bass fishing. There are several articles in the sporting mags about fishing for large mouth bass, but we had not fished for them.  My partner recounted we had enough walleye in the refrigerator and could catch more any time, but he needed to engage in the sport of fishing for large mouth bass. 

I enjoy being out in the boat and getting a tan, so I didn’t truly care what my man was fishing for.  Then one day we were out on the lake and he caught a big bass casting into shallow water.  I was dazzled at the sight of this attractive fish jumping out of the water, shaking his head trying to shed the hook in his mouth.  I had been laying in the sun reading a book when the excitement started.  My husband instructed me to get the net.  I waited with the net and watched the large fish leap out of the water again.  After the leap my husband’s's fishing rod almost doubled over as the fish bore down into the lake.  This battle went on for roughly five minutes before we finally had the large mouth bass in the boat.  We took pictures and then released this superb fighter. 

After witnessing the excitement my husband had in hooking the giant bass I announced I wanted to give it a try.  After only 3 casts I felt pull on the line and then a robust pulling.  I have been fishing for a number of years and couldn’t believe the strength of that bass.  He swam under the boat to attempt to rid himself of the hook.  He then took an air borne jump from the water.  The leap in the air dislodged the hook from his mouth.  It was the most exciting fish I ever lost!  I knew why my partner had switched to fishing for large mouth bass. 

Fishing for bass involves the use of synthetic lures.  There is a large choice of lures in numerous shapes and sizes.  During the past I haven’t taken notice when my partner is picking out lures, but with bass fishing I have started my personal tackle box.  What a wonderfully fun fish to catch.  I do not take a book with me in the boat when we are fishing for large mouth bass.

Do you love fishing?  Have you heard of the Kenai River in Alaska?  Kenai River fishing is an angler’s waking dream, actually the mother lode of salmon fishing.  The river runs an impressive 82 miles, from Kenai Lake in southern Alaska to the Pacific ocean, at Cook’s Inlet.  

Beginning in May, continuing through mid-October, the Kenai promontory, just 3 hours south of harbor, offers a buffet of fishing adventures you won’t shortly forget.  

Among the salmon varieties found are King, Sockeye, Silver and Red, with two runs every year.  As well as record-sized salmon, Kenai River fishing offers Steelhead, Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden.  

If you adore fishing, the Kenai River peninsula is heaven on earth.  The biggest salmon ever caught in the world was a 97-pound King Salmon, in 1985.  Ardent fishermen flock to the Kenai Peninsula, expecting to best this record.  A typical catch is 40 pounds!  It isn’t getting much better than that.  

Here is a rundown of the Kenai River fishing season, to help you plan your vacation!  

round the middle of June, there’s one run of the Red Blueback salmon, followed by another in the middle of July.  If you like smoked salmon, you will want to be fishing now, as the Red variety is the king of smoked salmon.  Reds are also highly prized for the grill, as well as canning.  

Also running in mid-June and mid-July are the Chinook salmon.  While other rivers in Alaska yield more fish, the King salmon of the Kenai stream are renowned for their great size.  A typical catch in the second run is 40-50 pounds.  Don’t be surprised to net a King of a larger size!  

Kenai River fishing offers 2 runs of Silver salmon, one in early Aug and another in late Sep.  The bigger catches are generally found in the September run.  

If all of this isn’t enough to make you salivate, the Kenai River yields prize sized Dolly Varden and Rainbow trout.  

Your vacation plans should include a trip to Cook’s Inlet for a saltwater fishing excursion to Kachemak and Resurrection Bays, where the giant bottom-dwelling halibut live.  The Alaskan record halibut which weighed in at 466 pounds was caught in Kachemak Bay!  

Drive just thirty miles from Kenai to Clam Gulch, a preferred destination for clamming.  Razor clams are abundant here.  As the name implies, their shells are pointy, so be careful!  Best digging times are when the tide is at minus two feet or lower.  Check with the Department of Fish and Game for local boundaries.  

As you might guess, lodging is bounteous throughout the area of the Kenai River.  You will find extensively furnished cabins all along the Kenai, with excellent led fishing tours.  Fishing people come from all over the world to sample a Kenai River fishing holiday.  Be sure you book ahead!  It is an experience you will not forget.  Bon Appetit!
