Spending My Free Time
My passion is reading. I’ve loved doing this ever since I was a little boy, and still do, at my age. The local library was one of my favorite places thanks to its peaceful atmoshpere that allowed me to read in peace, and the fact that it had such a large collection of books to choose from. Unfortunately, nothing good ever lasts, and the library was closed due to lack of funds, and no plans have been made to open another one.
Since nothing I could do would change this decision, I was left with nothing to do but to find another place in which to do my reading, that offered the same conditions as the library. I figured the park would be a good choice, and I decided to go check it out. I quickly found a good spot that was far away from the regular paths, so people would not come by, and offered the necessary peace and quiet. I thought it was too good to be true, but I decided to try it the next day.
When I came back I found a lot of kids playing around my new found spot. Of course reading was out of the question in these conditions, but I liked the spot very much and didn’t want to look for another one. I began searching for something that would allow me to read even with the noise around me.
Because I like listening to music almost as much as reading, I decided to get one of those small, portable mp3 players I’ve heard so much about. I read a Sansa e280 review and ended up getting that little mp3 player. I love it! It’s so small it fits into my pocket easily, and allows me to read without having to listen to the children playing around me.
Acutally, I’ve started liking it so much that I don’t even have a book with me when going to my “reading” place. I just stay there listening to music and watching the children play. That’s really something for me, because, in the past, I would have never left home without a book in my bag.
Old Crayons Make New Candles
You probably have many old crayons in you home that are seldom used. Before throwing them out, consider using them to make candles. This can be a great way to turn them into something new and useful again. Most children will love the idea of making candles and enjoy knowing their old crayons were used to make them. The candles you make with old crayons make great gifts.
Before you get started, discuss safety with your children. Since the crayons will have to be melted at a high heat, they may not be able to participate in that part of the candle making process. Assure them that there are many other aspects of the candle making that they can be a part of.
To start, gather your supplies. In addition to the crayons, you will need a wax carton. This can be from milk, fabric softener, or orange juice container. You will also need paraffin wax, two full ice cube trays, a double boiler, and white packing string. If you don’t want to use your double boiler, an old coffee can and a saucepan will work just as well.
Trim the top off of the wax carton, leaving it approximately six inches high. Cut the string for the wick at least 8 inches long. You will later trim the wick to fit the holder. To ensure a wick that burns easier, take three pieces and braid them together. Use smaller pieces of string to tie the ends together. The holders for your candles can be anything you desire as long as they are non-flammable. Pretty vases, glasses, and jars work nicely.
Melt about three pounds of paraffin wax in the double boiler or coffee can. To help it melt faster, cut it into small chunks. It taks about 15 to 20 minutes for melting. While the wax is melting, peel the papers off of the old crayons. You and your children can choose to separate the colors by lights and darks to have a mix that combines well or you can mix them all together and see what the color ends up being.
For best results, only add the crayons to the wax after it has completely melted. After melthing the crayons and wax, pour the mixture into your candles holders as soon as possible. If you would like to make scented candles, try adding a splash of cinnamon or vanilla to your hot wax mixture.
It is important that the candles be left alone to completely harden. Make sure you have an area where this can be done. It is also important to make sure small children can’t reach them because the wax will stay hot for several hours and can cause serious injuries.
Making candles out of old crayons is a great way to spend the afternoon creating a fun project with your kids!
Birthday Presents
There are some people who simply cannot live without the latest technology. They know everything about that, always must have the newest gadget, and keep them dearly at home or office. This hobby could be a useful one, but it surely is expensive. I reckon I am one of these crazy people, but I have to concentrate on just a few areas, as I don’t have unlimited financial resources.
People who are crazy about gadgets will have no limits in spending money on their hobby. It’s useless telling them they have everything they need. Sadly, once a year it is their birthday. This can dismay everybody, can’t it?
As they have already bought everything, buying a present for them, one that they will really like, could be quite challenging, and one have to take notes and photographs in order to accomplish this job. The easiest way is to go to the store and buy the most expensive thing, or the one with the widest range of features, or, you can just ask for some advice.
My best advice is: get the archos 605 160 gb. Not even your friend would dream of something better. It has everything. As I am sure your friend has a plasma TV, wireless routers, and other such devices, this one comes with the bonus that it can be connected to any of them. He must have already put it on his shopping list and knows everything about it, so you won’t have to explain him its features, or how to use it. The sure thing is, this portable media player makes the perfect birthday present for your friend.
Now that you have got rid of the burden of looking for something for his next birthday, you can enjoy yourself, ease off, and have fun. I would suggest having your name engraved on his little gadget, so that he could remember how obliging you have been, when he gets you something for your birthday.

Your Next Hobby: Is it Woodworking?
Woodworking covers a variety of processes, such as cabinetmaking, joinery, marquetry, turning, and woodcarving. Nevertheless, all expert craftspeople have had to learn the fundamental techniques of marking, measuring, dimensioning, assembling and finishing. These skills are the fundamentals of woodworking, be it hobby or profession.
The capability to conceptualize three dimensionally is necessary to mark up the wood and to envisage how one piece fits with another and in what order. As well, you’ll have to learn which tools will bring about the best outcome, considering the degree of accuracy called for and the attributes of the wood you’re working with.
The procedure of cutting down the wood precisely to size is known as dimensioning – a process that’s straightforward in theory but takes much repetition to hone. You’ll need to know how to cut and assemble various kinds of joints for all but the most simple woodworking projects. Traditionally, joinery is considered to be the true test of a woodworker’s expertise, since it requires hand-eye coordination that never wavers. Nevertheless, by practicing you will figure out the best way to secure two sections of wood together so they are durable but still attractive.
Knowing how wood actually performs is a key component of these basic abilities. It’s a one of a kind, living object that swells and shrinks with shifts in humidity, an issue that a woodworker has to address in the planning and building of each item. There are woods that are easier to work with than others, and every piece of wood, no matter what type it is, has distinct twists and turns in its grain.
In woodworking, there isn’t just one right way to do things. The best method is the one that suits you the most, and strikes a balance between the time required to complete the project, the woodworking tools at hand, the satisfaction you receive from the activity and the desired quality of the finished product.
There are pros and cons for using either hand tools or machines for DIY woodworking. There are those who will insist that hand tools help you to learn how to cut and form wood while keeping the grain intact. Other experts in the field believe that you can complete a project faster by using hand tools, mostly because of the time involved in preparing to work with mechanical tools. Yet others think exactly the opposite.
With a bit of patience, the proper tools and techniques, and a good design, you could be well on your way to creating something you’ll appreciate for a long time to come.
Easy Ways to Take Up Woodworking as a Hobby
Some people might consider woodworking to be a difficult, complicated undertaking. Surely only the master craftsmen with years of experience can create anything worthwhile. Happily, this simply isn’t true. Everyone has to start somewhere, even the masters. Somewhere in the past, they also began with basic woodworking projects.
It’s important to learn as much as possible before you get started if you want to get the most from this pastime. Learn as much as you can about the techniques and tools involved so that you’re well prepared before you start attempting your first project. You should also look into what kinds of wood are best for certain projects.
Fortunately, in today’s world there is a wealth of information available to you. Read magazines and books to get project ideas and instructions. You could also just go online and find innumerable websites that can help you get started.
Another good way to get a handle on woodworking is to sign up for some classes. This will provide you with a good opportunity to actually see how some of the basic techniques are performed. Plus, you’ll learn what you need to know about safety precautions, which is the most critical part of woodworking.
You need to learn the safety rules before you get going with even a simple woodworking project. Of course there’s the risk of injury, but there’s also the chance it will turn you off your new pastime completely.
When you’re ready to begin working on something of your own, keep it as simple as possible. It’s astounding what can be crafted using only basic tools. Start with a simple project that just uses hand tools. You can find lots of kits for sale that are targeted to total beginners, where you just have to assemble the pieces. The wood components come pre-cut. This gives you a chance to learn how to assemble a project without having to learn how to use new tools at the same time.
When it comes to woodworking equipment and tools, start with the basics and slowly add items as you need them. Start off with some basic hand tools, and grow your collection as your skills advance and as you can afford it. When you’re shopping for tools, purchase the highest quality you can afford. If your tools don’t last and you have to replace them, you really haven’t saved any money in the long run.
When you reach the point where you’re confident about putting together basic projects, it’s time to tackle some more difficult tasks. However, no matter how experienced you become at DIY woodworking, always remember to keep safety in mind.
Get the Right Measuring and Marking Tools for Woodworking
Although woodworking is an occupation, it’s also a hobby for lots of people. Most woodworkers are at their best when they’re using their tools. There are numerous kinds of tools you might need in your craft, depending upon your specific requirements.
Some woodworking tools are suitable for general purpose use, and others are quite specialized in nature. They are usually compact and facilitate the process of woodworking. Many jobs are easier than in the past thanks to the introduction of motorized woodworking tools.
The basic kinds of woodworking tools are cutting and shaping, assembly tools, and finishing. For cutting and shaping, measuring and marking tools are required. This is because they show you where to cut.
Rulers are used in woodworking for the purpose of measuring. The common types of rulers are the wooden folding, the metal tape measure, and the wooden zigzag ruler. Tape measures are indispensible if you’re measuring long sections of wood.
When purchasing a ruler, look for a durable, well made product with standard markings. It requires a locking mechanism to keep it in place. Take care of the ruler and wipe it after every use. This is particularly important if it’s a metal product, which is prone to becoming rusted.
Squares are used in woodworking to make angles. Similar to rulers, there are many kinds of this product. Squares also have markings and are also used to check the true and square joints. Miter squares are best for a 45 degree angle. Try squares, which are L-shaped, are used for 90 degree angles. For either 45 or 90 degree angles, you’d use a combination square.
Wooden squares are cheaper than metal, but are somewhat less accurate. However, they’re usually good enough for most DIY woodworking projects. Check them for rust or rot and wipe them after every use to keep them in good condition.
For the purpose of marking in woodworking, a sharp pencil is used. Some woodworkers prefer the marking knife owing to its higher degree of accuracy. Some other measuring tools are gauges, dividers and compasses. Care should be taken to check the accuracy of the tools, and they should be cleaned regularly.
It’s important to take good care of your woodworking tools. Clean them after each use and check them for rust or rot. The outcome of your project relies on them.
Buying An eBook Reader
For almost twenty years, the perfect portable ebook reading hardware has been 5 years away. We’re now down to waiting for a cheap enough, lower power enough paper-quality display with long battery life.
Once we have cheap and affordable ebooks, the medium by which we read will also be the medium by which can write and respond. Reading will cease being a solitary act and will become a social one eventually. You can see this happening already with the blogs and online likes.
So, I have been assuming that the ebook reader will mimic the form factor of books: display a page, and maybe make a rustling sound as the page is turned slowly. But it takes the ebook so long to arrive for the market that they may skip book emulation entirely and become general purpose browsers/composers. In any case, they are better with blogs than for books.
In my opinion, format matters a whole bunch more than medium. In the physical world, format (e.g. magazine, hardcover, small-print soft-cover, etc.) provides a bunch of cues on the type and depth of the content. Photos placed in the right spots attract our attention immediately. The formats also tell us a lot about age appropriateness. I do not ebooks catching on until they really have a format to them. Maybe that makes a bunch of different ebook reader niches rather than an e-book monolith.Who knows in the first place.
eBook can be ubiquitous only if the content price is reduced to a level that the mass market can afford it. RCA ebook readers have been around for years, but I still do not see people using them on the trains, buses and airplanes. On the other hand, almost everyone of my friend has got one. Why? Well, that is because we all read Russian. And Russian ebooks are dirt cheap in the first place (if not free).
So, yes, in that sense I do hope ebooks jump directly to supporting blog-like content, otherwise we might wait another twenty years before the perfect ebook hardware emerges and gain mass adoption.
