Stress affects people in different ways. I become quite withdrawn when at these stages and my mind goes into overdrive stressing about many different things.
Other people suffer from panic attacks, become very shaky and nervous, feel sick in the stomach, become sad and can begin to think in a very negative way.
Most of the conditions I have described above are actually a mental and not so much of a physical problem. This is why I believe meditation to be an excellent form of stress relief or stress management.
I am very much aware of the many benefits of meditation and have done my far share of stressing. Stuttering ruined my early life and caused me to lose a lot of my self-confidence. I worked hard to stop stammering and was eventually rewarded with fluency at the age of 21.
Stress and worry also affected my work life within the composite door company where I held quite a senior position. At time I would worry far too much about the trivialities of work.

I personally prefer the sitting meditation. I now like to meditate around 3 or 4 times a day, where possible. Originally I had a lack of belief about what I was doing and about if it would work. I must admit that I really found it hard to fully focus at this point. With practice and realising that I needed this to work for me, I managed to get enough concentration and focus to see the full benefits.
A lot of the people in my circle of friends think that I am a bit mad, including my best friends Dave and Pete who work in the cost reduction experts sector. They can not believe that I actually just sit there and think. Meditation has had such a positive effect on my life and continues to do so, therefore my friends can mock as much as they like. I actually believe that some of them should try it themselves but they always laugh at the suggestion.

Change – It’s A Process, Not a Discrete Event
All of us, no matter who we are, face unremitting change and adjustment in life. 1. Endings
I appreciate this model because it is one of the few that I’ve seen that reminds us that all changes – whether the “good” ones or the “bad” ones – start with something in our lives that is ending. But, regardless of the change in our lives, most likely the first thing(s) that we’ll become aware of are the things we must bid farewell.
2. Neutral Zone
The next part of the model is I think the hardest one. We’ve released all the established, safe, comfortable, well-known things that we’ve trusted to simplify our every day decision-making processes, friends we can share our ups and downs with. We’ve had to relinquish all the dependable “safety nets” we’ve integrated into our lives: the insurance agent we’ve come to rely upon, our child’s schoolteacher, the community center where we’ve become well established and have strong supportive relationships.
The Neutral Zone is the stage where all the “old stuff” has to be left behind, but the required new support structures haven’t yet been created, or if existing, they are still new and rather fragile.
Life in the Neutral Zone can be relatively frightening as you live in a state of novelty, ambiguity and uncertainty. But persistence and perseverence are the attitudes essential to a victorious trip through the Neutral Zone.
3. Beginnings
Gradually, over time, we begin to get things put in place for our new existence. If just starting college, we’ve attended all our classes, met the teachers, made some friends, and perhaps joined a fraternity or sorority. If starting a new trade, we’ve overcome the initial shock of not even knowing where the water cooler and the rest rooms are, to being a full-fledged team member, and we’ve gained knowledge and job competence. We’ve met our managers and many of our associates (perhaps we’re no longer the “newest” kid on the block). We’ve probably found a new home, unpacked most (if not all) the boxes. We know where the best food stores, pharmacies, banks, car repair shops, beauty salons, and emergency clinics are found.
Things are slowing settling into a daily pattern, and life is becoming more established – and more predictable every day (although it will never become completely static, or change-free).
We’re adapting and growing into our new roles and adapting to our new location.
This doesn’t happen overnight; it takes time. The worst thing you can do is expect that it will come about quickly – it won’t. Give yourself, and your family, time and the space each family member needs, to adapt to the change – and they will!

Stress and You
I come to realise that a number of magazines provide useful articles on stress too. Most of the tips all focus on the same concepts – breathing, counting to 10 and taking time to focus on your own self. While all of those suggestions are probably more helpful to others than they are for me, I’d rather read some articles on stress elimination. I do not even know if got any suggestions out there, but if you can find one, tell me!
