Wheatgrass – The Truth

You have probably heard people talking about Wheat grass at some point during the last few years. Whether you’ve overheard discussions at work or member of the family already utilising some of the numerous varieties of wheat grass but if you’re like most people, you might still misunderstand wheat grass or the natural healing power wheat grass harnesses.

Wheatgrass is basically the young blades of grass grown from wheat grain. When the grain is soaked and planted it develops shoots within a few days. A few days later the shoots develop into blades of lush green grass. After as little as 8-10 days the wheatgrass is ripe for harvesting, At this stage it is worth noting that although the wheatgrass already posseses high levels of enzymes it hasn’t had the time required to process complex carbohydrates which are often found in wheatgrass grown over winter.

Once the wheatgrass is ready to be harvested it is usually processed into many forms, which can include wheat grass powder (Typically made by drying and grinding the wheat grass blades into a very fine powder) wheatgrass capsules (basically the powder filled into capsules for easy digestion) wheatgrass tablets (again often the powder cold pressed into tablet form) and wheatgrass juice. (The wheatgrass leaves are juiced in a specialist wheat grass juicer which crushes the liquid from the wheatgrass without destroying vital nutrients.)

Any of the various forms of wheatgrass harness a wealth of health boosting properties, with a large range of vitamins enzymes, minerals and amino acids. Wheat grass also consists of an impressive 70% chlorophyll, which is very similar to blood due to its DNA structure. This means that our bodies can utilise the nutritional content in wheatgrass very easily.

Wheatgrass has been around for a long time but it has only recently become popular in the united kingdom and you can now find it online and at many health food shops. Wheat grass has been in use for many medical conditions and can be used topically for external skin problems like acne and eczema. When taken internally it can even help detoxify the blood supply replenishing it with vital nutrients that are needed for optimum health.
